A twin-engine Piper Aerostar 601P carrying 2 Florida men crashed in Sugar Grove Township killing them both. The aircraft departed from Aurora Airport on a foggy Saturday night bound for Denver when something caused the IFR rated pilot to crash at high speed into large trees and a garage sparking a car fire. Sugar Grove Fire Chief Marty Kunkel lives next to the crash site at Rt. 47 and Old Oaks Rd. and took notice of the loud engine noise 15-20 seconds prior to the crash and was on scene within a minute. The crash created a debris field and about 10 fires. There was also a downed power line nearby. This recording begins at 7 PM with the tone out for mutual aid tenders from Kaneville and Maple Park FD. Fire crews from many neighboring communities provided assistance to Sugar Grove FD.
