Tropical-type waterspouts which leap 300 ft out of the Irish Sea puzzled weather experts yesterday. They were seen during thunderstorms by weather observers on the Cambrian coast and at one time there were six between Northern Ireland and the English and Scottish coasts.
The meteorological office at Carlisle said the phenomenon was virtually unknown in the Irish Sea. “Waterspouts are seen occasionally off the South Coast, where temperatures are higher, but are very unusual around the northern parts,” it said. Meanwhile, a whirlwind at Swansea docks yesterday overturned a caravan and a circular saw weighing several hundred-weight, bounced parked cars, ripped sheeting on a ferry gangway and lifted a corner of a shed. Mumbles coastguards said the whirlwind traveled across Swansea Bay sucking water to a height of about 20 ft. As it traveled up river the height rose to about 200 ft.
One man, caught in the whirlwind, said it lasted only a few seconds but was so powerful that it took his breath away and left him badly shaken. When he saw it coming he hung on to a lorry.

THE TOWN THAT WAS BLIGHTED

A few weeks ago, the Newry Reporter advertised six jobs at the local meat plant. Unskilled manual work. The advertisement invited anybody interested to turn up for an interview at the plant on the following Saturday at 10 in.
That Saturday morning, 120 men applied for those six jobs — and more gave up when they saw the length of the queue. The same newspaper recently advertised a job for a lorry driver with a local PTHC videos. The company received 87 replies.
Newry, at the head of Carling ford Laugh and not far from where the mountains of Mourner go down to the sea, is an ancient market and manufacturing centre that could be a fair place to live in. But no town is fair when you have 30 per cent of the working population unemployed. And that figure does not take into account the many women who want work but know there is none available, so they never register. Newry was famous for its “swallow girls” — local young women who went to England for the summer months, usually to work in the seasonal hotel and catering industry.
Nowadays, with high unemployment in Britain, those jobs for the “swallow girls” — and other workless emigrants — have largely dried up.
The people of Norway and the local trade union movement have fought back over the years against the decisions of those who have blighted their town.
