Quicktime Broadcaster Tutorial

Quicktime Broadcaster is an extremely powerful broadcasting tool that is similar to FME but for the Mac, which you can now use on JTV. Let us first go through some of the network settings that you will need that are specific to streaming to Justin.tv.

Network Tab

The host name will always stay the same live.justin.tv:1935/app, File will be live_user_username (where username will be your Justin.tv account name) and you can obtain your Username here make sure you copy and paste it exactly as is and lastly the password is: jtv

Video/Audio Tab

Here are some baseline settings for video/audio that might be helpful. You may want to try tweaking the settings as your internet connection allows to raise the quality.

Notes about H.254

When running h.264 just remember that your CPU is going to really get nailed, but the quality is impressive.

• Make sure that the keyframes are no further than 600 frames apart
• The delay in the live stream increases with the RTSP option vs using the flash plugin by several seconds
• Setting a buffertime in QTB to '0' helps with the delay, but does not get rid of it
• Limit datarate to 1000Kbps else you may get stuck in a 'prerolling' screen forever
• Even if the datarate is set to 1000Kbps, it is VBR so it will only use the bandwidth required (we average out to 500Kbps)
• If a OS X user is running CamTwist, they will need a beta version (not available to public yet) to make it work with QTB
• The QTB framerate option seems to have no impact on anything. Set it to 5 and it will encode at 30. Set it to 60 and it will encode at 30.
