This is how it is in our Dodgeball league too. There are these jock frat douchebags who go for headshots all the time and it makes the new people never want to play again. Especially the girls who are interested and want to try out dodgeball.
Trolls are a part of the internet, and gaming and the internet are becoming more and more tied together. The personal attacks and woman's inhumanity to woman is sad, but easily explained because a lot of gamers aren't
professionals nor community-oriented. Western Culture is to blame, and this is probably why Lineage and StarCraft do so great in Korea.
I've been part of an RPG Club for years and seen the difference between gamers who want to play to play, play to
win, and play to have a good time with friends. Speaking out is definitely important, and NOT futile: all it takes for evil to triumph is the indifference of good men.
Gaming is competitive. So, you have good sportsmen and sportswomen, and bad ones. Guys will trash talk about what they did or will do to the other guy's mom, girlfriend, or sister. Girls tend to do more emotional attacks, it
seems like. (On an aside, the part where you're talking about the gadgets and tech coming down the pipeline, was really awesome--dare I say, sexy.)
Nice Ron Paul reference! You have a PhD in gaming and sexiness. ;-) Run for Congress! Why isn't there a Gamer Congress yet?
